WORLD OCEAN DAY

The ocean is the beating blue heart of our planet. Covering over 70% of Earth's surface, the ocean sustains all life by producing oxygen, regulating climate, and supporting an incredible diversity of species. World Ocean Day is a global reminder of the critical role our oceans play and the urgent need to protect them.

Organisations like Sea Shepherd are on the front lines of this mission, defending marine wildlife and enforcing conservation laws on the open seas. Their bold, direct-action approach inspires us to take responsibility for the ocean’s future.

We recently conducted a Q&A with Sea Shepherd to coincide with World Ocean Day on the 8th of June.

What are the most effective actions individuals can take in their daily lives to help protect the oceans?

  1. -Refuse single-use plastic
  2. -Shop at bulk stores
  3. -Reduce your use of plastic packaging
  4. -Support Marine Conservation and consider volunteering
  5. -Sign petitions
  6. -Attend community events including beach clean-ups and rallies
  7. -Spread the word - speak to friends and family about issues facing our oceans

What small changes can people make that have a surprisingly big impact on ocean health?

  1. -Have a check list to make sure you have what you need before leaving the house. For example keep a cup, water bottle and reusable shopping bags
  2. -Collect rubbish on your walks on the beach or park
  3. -Reduce your intake of animal products

What are some common habits or products we use that seem harmless but are actually damaging to marine life?

  1. -Chemical sunscreen
  2. -Cleaning products and detergents that contain Phosphates
  3. -Fertilisers and pesticides
  4. -Overconsumption of meat and fish
  5. -And the obvious ones like single-use coffee cups and water bottles

Are there any surprising sources of ocean pollution that people often overlook (sunscreen, glitter, certain foods)?

  1. -Plastic decorations like balloons, glitter, ribbons
  2. -Food packaging like shrink wrapping from around vegetables

For people who feel far from the ocean, how can they still play an active role in protecting it?

All the same ways mentioned above! Sadly, all the inland rubbish travels into the ocean via storm drains and rivers. Everyone can stand up for the oceans and make changes to protect it, no matter where they live.

What are some ways people can get involved with Sea Shepherd, either through volunteering, donating, or spreading your mission?

  1. -Visit our website to inquire about volunteering in your local area. There are a lot of ways you can get involved, whether it is helping with market stalls or travelling to Antartica on our ships, there is something for everyone!
  2. -If you don't want to commit to volunteering, you can attend community events. Keep an eye on our socials for community Beach Clean Ups or rallies in your area! Everyone is welcome.
  3. -Follow, like and share our social media and sign up to our newsletter to understand the issues and help spread the word.
  4. -Donate when you can. Every dollar helps our ships on the water and crews on the front line.
  5. -Consider hosting an event at your workplace or school. Reach out and we can help make the day more meaningful with presentations and resources.
