Meet Mini! Katrina Gorry Q&A
Meet Mini! Katrina Gorry Q&A

Katrina Gorry is a force to be reckoned with both on & off the field. This trailblazer may be nicknamed 'Mini' but there's nothing small about her accomplishments!

Katrina has played on fields & for teams worldwide. She has been a prominent member of the Australian women's national team, the Matildas, since 2012. She has played for Melbourne Victory, Ottawa Fury, Brisbane Roar, Kansas City & Avaldsnes......just to name a few! She currently plays as a midfielder for West Ham United whom she also captains.

Katrina has nailed balancing motherhood & an elite sporting career. Let's kick back with our recent Q&A with this awesome goal-getter!

Your nickname is Mini. Can you give us an example of when being ‘Mini’ came in handy?

Mini always comes in handy around the house, when my partner decides to leave all the cupboards open and there about 5 centimetres from connecting to my head! So, I just walk under them and it's all fine and then she's the one that actually connects with them which I laugh about constantly.

If you could assemble the most epic soccer squad - who would you enlist?

Who would I enlist in a football team…Spain! To be honest I'd probably say Bunny Shaw from Man City and Yui Hasegawa from Man City. Oh she's so good!  She's an epic player I love watching her play but hate marking or chasing her around the field.

If you could add one ridiculous rule to soccer what would it be?

I mean it's not a ridiculous rule but I would never have a penalty shootout. I would go into like drop off so it doesn't come down to one person missing or they keep being the hero.

I would just make it like drop off 9v9 if no one scores after a few minutes, 8v8 that would be like absolutely killer on the legs but fun to watch and at least you know eight or nine players lose and it's not just on one person. I think it's great rule actually.

Any good taunts to instil fear into your opponents?

So I'm not sure if that instils fear or just makes the opposition a little bit more angry. We like to play loud upbeat music in the change rooms, so I'm not sure that's really instilling any fear but we are trying to do as much as possible.

Heard any funny chants while you’ve been on the field?

Not so much a chant but I do remember when I went to spit on the field (which I don't often do) but I was sick one day and it got like spit coming out of my mouth and so this guy was constantly chanting 'Gollie Gorry' the whole time which I was not really impressed with but it was quite funny at the time.

Entrance music to lead the team out. What tune are you picking?

I'm not sure if it's like pump up the song I do listen to Hall of the Fame by the Scripts or Flowers by Miley because it always reminds me of Harper. So it kind of grounds me a little bit before I head out of the pitch. I'm not sure if my teammates would find it as a pump up song!

If you could choose any Knobby design to be turned into a soccer kit - which one would you choose?

It would probably be Plunder Down Under…..I love wearing them 'cause it feels like I'm in Australia whenever I'm wearing them. If I had that on my Football Kit I’d just feel like I'm constantly living on a state beach in Australia with nice coffee living my best life!

Only one movie about soccer can be victorious. Who are you backing? Bend it like Beckham or Kicking & Screaming?

I have to go with 'Kicking and Screaming' I love that movie.

Your daughter Harper has become a bit of a mascot for the Tillies. Who else do you reckon she would be a great mascot for? Peppa Pig? Sweden?

I mean if I ask Harper who she would be a good mascot for and, if I bought Sweden up, she would hands down say Sweden so I'm just going to take that out just so she doesn't have the opportunity to say Sweden!

She loves Peppa Pig so I'm going to go with that or maybe that like a backup dancer for someone, she love dancing and loves music answer.

You live in the UK nowadays - hit us with your best UK slang. We’d be chuffed to hear.

Best slang would be “you OK, you alright, you're alright”….. never know how to answer it because they're not even asking if I'm OK or if I'm good or how I am so still don't know how to answer it!
