Let’s delve into the icy waters of Diamond Beach with these key facts about this epic location.
Location
It’s located near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in southeastern Iceland, close to Vatnajökull National Park.
Ice aka the ‘diamonds’
Chunks of ice break off from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and are carried by the Jökulsá River to the Atlantic Ocean. Once they wash ashore they sparkle amongst the black sand like diamonds.
Black Sand Beach
Famous for its black sand which is formed from volcanic activity. The black sand & icebergs serve a striking contrast.
Wildlife
Seals are often spotted resting on the icebergs. Orcas can be spotted swimming in the surf. Diamond Beach is also an important breeding ground for many of Iceland’s most well-known birds including the Arctic Tern & the Great Skua.
Aurora Borealis
During the winter months, Diamond Beach can also be a surreal location for viewing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
